Our History
Alan’s background has always been based around building competition engines.
Alan started working at Anglia 105E in the late fifties and into early sixties, working on Lotus Cortina soon after that. When the Escort Twin Cam arrived later, Alan was Rallying, Rally Crossing and Auto Grassing for Autoville.
Engines quickly progressed on to the BDA Power MK1 Escorts in the early seventies.
BD became more popular and was used in more applications and rallying, circuits, rallycross. Alan was always at the forefront of the industry, and still is today.
After running the Performance Engine department at Burton in the early eighties, Alan started MASS Racing building and supporting customers using all types of Ford BD Series Engines from sportscars, touring cars, rally cross and long distance events.
Paul started in the business, MASS Racing at the age of 16, assembling and track supporting BD powered sports cars. In 2000 he moved to America and continued working on Ford based V8 sports car engines.
Our Team
After MASS was sold, Alan joined Paul in the USA, running the engine shop, building Ford Rally V8s for Leman. During this period, Alan continued a small business in the UK building Historic BD Series engines for many Formulas.
In 2006 Alan moved back to the UK and Sherwood Engines took off. Nearly seven decades later, we are still here and have become a worldwide leading company in the Historic Rally industry. We pride ourselves on customer support, performance, and reliability of our engines. We continue to work hard to ensure we provide the best product and service to our customers.
